San Diego Real Estate |The Wonderful and Unique Beach Culture of Mission Beach
Welcome to Mission Beach, The funnest beach on the Pacific Coast. Ok, on the Pacific Coast of San Diego. Mission Beach has often been referred to as the San Diego version of Atlantic City.
The Belmont Amusement park has a wonderful and historic place in our San Diego history first built in 1925 by a true hero and philanthropist of the San Diego region, John Speckles. If you have kept up with my posts over the years you will remember the photo story on the Speckles Organ Pavilion at Balboa Park.
The Belmont Park closed down in the mid 1970's and the the famous roller coaster, The Giant Dipper fell into disrepair. A few years later, the city established the Belmont Park Association and they began to process to restore and expand the park. The park was newly dedicated in May of 1988. The roller coaster is 2600 feet long and was originally built for the paltry sum of $150,000. It was restored and re-opened in 1990 for the sum of 2 million.
The WaveHouse was opened in 2005 and is a great example for illustrating the Southern California Beach Life Experience as found at Mission Beach. A complete package of great food, a party atmosphere, beach side club bar and has a wonderful beach side wave machine where you can experience the perfect wave in a controlled environment. Not to mention the entertainment that seems to appeal to all generations.
The Plunge is a giant indoor-outdoor public swimming pool with a retractable roof. It was originally constructed in 1925 and is now incorporated into the WaveHouse Athletic Club which also offers an array of facilities for a good workout , swimming and can teach surfing using the wave machine.
As may might guess, housing in Mission beach is quite expensive and in short supply. The closer to the water, even cottages can easily sell for double what they might be found for more inland. With Beachfront and Bayfront homes and condos, Mission Beach is highly sought after and is a culture and lifestyle all of it's own.
