There are many Home Repair Books on the market and they are probably not on the Best Seller List anywhere. As REALTORS® we very often see homes with lots of home repairs done by owners that are not improvements at all but actually spoil the overall impression of the home. Handymen homeowners that can barely pound a nail often take cosmetic and repair shortcuts that really don't fit the real solution to the original problem.
A well known home inspection company in San Diego county provides a loose leaf Home Repair Handbook to each buyer that uses their company for the home inspection. I have reviewed the book personally many times and it is quite wonderfully illustrated and to me really explains the proper repair for many issues that arise in our homes.
I do have to wonder how many homeowners would actually use it as a reference guide though. With life as fast paced as it is, I am guessing most homeowners would locate a local handy man and not even bother. But wait, if a homeowner had even looked in the handbook, and discovered thier issue in there, wouldn't it be useful to spend at least a few minutes to better understand the issue? Then when the local handy man comes to do the work, they are going to know whether the repair was done correctly the first time.
I think having a little bit of knowledge is certainly better than none in this case. I think having having a homeowners guide to repairs is a good thing and I am making reviews currently to see which one I will give as a closing gift to new home buyers. A few of the Sellers I know sure could have used one, :-)
