For a Hamburger Today, I'll Gladly Pay You Tuesday
For those of you who remember Popeye, Blimpy's famous words are haunting. As a kid, I actually never fully understood the message except this overweight over indulgent person loved and obviously needed hamburgers. I would draw the parallel to today's economic quagmire but it is so obvious, I see no reason to even go there.
So why did I mention this if not to lambaste today's economic mess? I was out shopping for accessories to stage two different properties that are soon coming on the market. The place where I shop was a mad frenzy of shopping carts filled to overflow with all the checkout counters all filled to capacity making the checkout lines quite long. Was this a sale on home goods and decorative accessories? No, but you would think so. These items are made mostly in China and come in by the boatloads at some extremely low prices.
I used to be so opposed to these items when they started to appear in the market place, opting for quality items manufactured in the US or imports that were often European with designers from Italy and Germany.
Why the change? Most Sellers want to budget carefully adding to the picture of quality in their homes but not wanting to spend what would otherwise cost a small fortune, And that seems to be quite logical. Our job is to obtain the highest price, not to spend more than they will get on a return of their investment of staging.
The large decorative art pieces that are obviously massed produced are unbelievably good looking. I found a pair of stunning block crystal lamps with beautiful shades for $79 each. I have seen these sell in the range of $500 a piece in lighting stores. The look of the merchandise is unparalleled. And the prices would blow you away.
In speaking with the sales help, they say that trucks come in frequently ( a few times a week )and the staging designers come in nearly every morning for the best of the new merchandise. The difference between them and myself is that the Seller pays for the merchandise, so it has to blend well with their own things since they will taking it with them. I do not charge for the service, since I benefit from the listing selling more quickly and for a higher price than what otherwise be the case.
It takes a lot of effort but my turnover rate is quite good so in the end, I sell more listings at higher prices and faster than most of my competition. It is win for the Seller and even the Buyer as they can see the best use of the space and how to decorate it. Some of the Buyers have even convinced the sellers to sell with some or all of the furnishings.
