Mad as Hell

Our American Flag - Forever Let It Wave

Today is Veterans Day and we all express  our individual pride at the sacrifice of these men and women. I do not write about politics or on topics that would raise eyebrows here in Rain but I am going on record today to  say that  I am indeed mad as hell and here is why. I believe America is the finest country on the face of the planet and one that I dearly love.  This country IS the greatest expression of freedom and privilege in the world.

Today, a large number of homeless Veterans who gave everything they had to our great land are huddled in doorways and on street corners in San Diego and other areas around the country. They have lost everything, their self esteem, their own pride and sense of dignity. They beg or bargain for food, drink, drugs, whatever it is that gets them through one day to the next.

How is it that we as a nation, as a city and State allow these men and women to suffer this incredible indignity. How is it that we can pass and attempt to fund retirement programs for public employees paid by tax dollars that in some cases are equal to or even exceeds their salaries. How is that many foreigners can enter this country and receive expensive services like free education, health care, dental, and some of our own Veterans do without and are seemly forgotten.

This is a national disgrace of gigantic proportions. We understand that Veterans have certain rights and privileges and even programs which they all earned. But what about these lost souls that need medical, mental services, housing, and real help to regain their self esteem and their lives back? Many of us care but too few of us help because it is just easier and more convenient not to notice. With our homeless veterans that are now little more than statistics, this is a  national disgrace and makes me mad as hell.

These men and and women stood up for us with courage and conviction but now, who has even a kernel of courage to end this hideous condition that exists day in and day out while this Veterans Day elicits  all the nice words about how great these men and women are but fail to prove it by ending the plight of the homeless Veterans.  Certainly there are generous individuals and organizations, both private and governmental, who care dearly and prove it but where's our  entire government effort that is so willing and able to give so much to everyone else but can't once and for all end this national disgrace.   Hmmm, Maybe Next Year!
