Rare and Exotic Tropical Fish

Rare and Exotic Tropical Fish

When I was a teenager, I used to collect and raise tropical fish. When I first stated out, they were fresh water tropicals but as I became more knowledgeable, the collections evolved to the salt water varieties. That required different tanks and equipment but because of their amazing colors and shapes, salt water tropicals soon became a real passion.

I designed all the backgrounds and these aquariums became works of art in themselves. I remember in my college art classes that a few of the scenes of these tanks became the inspiration for several acrylic paintings on layered acetate, creating 3D scenes, one of which I gifted to my art instructor.

On a recent visit to the Birch Aquarium here in San Diego, I found this jewel of the sea that I had never seen before. This rare and exotic beauty looks more like a piece of cloisonne jewelery, turquoise and marine blue vitreous enamel on copper. One of the challenges of the day was waiting for him to fully expose himself ( best side of course) from hiding in the abundant species of sea life, plants and coral.
