She is a really beautiful creature indeed. I also saw her counterpart who was quite the stud though his dark mane is getting a bit lighter than it used be. I am guessing that she remains happy while he is still the King. Lions live in a matriarchal society and the females are the main food hunters and are more stealth and fit than their male counterpart. This female weighs in the range of 350 lbs and the male in the range of 450 lbs. Because he guards the pride, he is less physically active and eats more than the female. The lion is the only member of the cat family that live in large social groups called prides, consisting of numerous females that also hunt as group. Imbari, shown here, still plays an important role in the matriarchal society. Though he hunts less and provides little of the food in the wild, he protects the pride and the territory. If other males want to enter the pride, they have to fight the current male. The large mane of the male protects again the claws of other males wanting to take over the pride. If they succeed, they either kill or chase off the existing male. At least at the Zoo, his position seems to be secure since he is the only male.
