San Diego County Fair Opens Today June 10-July 4th
San Diego Fair means it's now summer time for the locals here in San Diego County. A time for family fun, outings and no other event in the county is probably more fun or popular for the whole family.

Established 75 years ago as the Del Mar Fair, the San Diego County Fair is one of the larger fairs on the West Coast, rivaling in size to many state fairs around the country. And the age of it hasn't changed the things that people love most. The old fashioned displays and Contests of every kind including, landscaping to a theme, food and cooking of all types, pies and cakes, flowers, art works, photography, animals and wood carving just to name a few.
The theme of the Fair this year is " Race to the Fair" and that suggests that there will be lots of cars. If California is known for one thing beyond it amazing coastline, it's it car culture. So Fairgoers can expect to see lots of cars including Custom Cars, Classics, Hot Rods, Dune buggies, Woodies and Luxury cars.
When I was a kid growing up back in the Midwest, I used to dream the California dream of driving a Woodie with the surf boards on top, the radio blaring with the Beach Boys songs and life being a round the clock beach party. Sadly for me, by the time I got here, I was already well past the teens and the twenty something and the reality of earning a living got in the way of that dream. But it was certainly vivid and did wonders for my enhancing my imagination of how fun living on the the coast of California would be.
The Midway always has some exciting thrill rides for the thrill junkies that enjoy being speed whipped through the air in every direction. But it also has a milder air lift ride that carries you above and across the entire Fair from one side to another. At Center Field of the Race track is the Kiddie section of the midway with rides and games for the little ones. The Del Mar Race Track ground with it's giant grandstand is the seating area for the Grandstand Stage where the big name stars live entertainment takes place. This year we will have Pat Benatar, Randy Travis, Melissa Ethridge and REO Speedwagon and many other notables. But there is all kinds of entertainment throughout the grounds at all the various stages.
Probably the thing that attracts people the most is the fair food. From Bar-B-Que ribs, beef and pork, " a Bloomin" Onion, corn dogs, grilled corn on the cob, roasted turkey legs ( I was just reading about these cave man sized turkey legs. Try 1400 + calories- yikes!) , french fries drizzled in vinegar, Gyros and yummy treats like powdered Belgium Waffles and funnel cakes. The fair is that once a year event when many throw caution to the wind and just about anything you can think that can be fried will be consumed. Fried Pickles anyone? Would like that with horseradish sauce? I cringed a little when I wrote that last part, hehehe.
