Southern California Water Crisis and What We Can Do About It

The state association feels strongly that our voices together can make a significant difference in the conservation efforts of one of our most precious resources, H20.

The real take away for me is how much water is actually used for landscaping. The price for a green lawn and a lush landscape is well over 50% of our water resources and our costs of water use. I investigated the cost of replacing   my lawn with a synthetic turf that actually looks better than real. It was $10 per square foot and the cost for the grass area of my landscaping it would be about $7500.

I was at first shocked until I started to do the math. My average water bill is over well $350 every two months and grass maintenance is about $150 per month. Just those two items come to approx. $250 a month ( 57% of 1/2 of $350 plus $150 = $249.70 ). My calculations indicate that in 2 and half years, the new synthetic lawn would be paid for.

Over a five year period, my actual costs would be cut in half. The synthetic turf has a warranty of over ten years and once you do the math, it seems like a real bargain to have a perfect lawn. Sometimes in life you just have to stop and do the math.

PS, I also discovered that a new synthetic lawn is also considered at least in part a capital improvement which could have a favorable significance in the value of my home.
