San Diego Real Estate Voice : After All the Rain Comes the Welcome, Sun and Surf

After All the Rain Comes the Welcome, Sun and Surf

I had a couple hours off from a very busy schedule in real estate yesterday and decided to check out the coastline after a week of stormy and wet weather and see for myself what the surf was like. It was sunny and the temperature was in the mid 60's and lots of others around with the same idea.

As I scanned the La Jolla coastline area in downtown La Jolla, I could see that sea life was also taking advantage of the warm sun rays and found numerous colonies of different types of sea birds and of course the now famous seals that for some folks are unwelcome visitors there. I even saw a few new young pups adding to the growing population of what some say are " visitors". I didn't see any overnight bags around and as far as I could tell, they looked to me like they felt they were "home". The issue is now in court and I would love to be present when the Judge stops over to tell them the verdict. Priceless.

William - as always your photos are incredible. And the La Jolla coast is such a great place for photography. Is this with your new camera?

Hi Michael,

Taken with the Pentax D100 S SLR using a polarizing filter and a 300 mm lens. I have a new camera, the Nikon D-90 but it is still packed up from a recent plumbing re-pipe of my home. I will start to use the new camera soon. Still reading the manual though to learn how to use it.  :-)

Hi Jeff, No, it is still packed up. I have some accessories on order and still reading the manual to learn how to use to get the best results. I have been so busy with Buyers and visiting family that it has been a slow transition. Soon I expect. :-)

Hi Bill, Nice to see you again and you are very welcome. Glad you liked it.

Hi Joan, I just saw your name on the board and left you a comment on the next to the last post you did. I had an announcement that I received several e-mails ( one being that you left a comment )and look at you, you had already come by and left me a comment. Business is brisk in that I am working with Buyers ( not usual for me being a listing agent). The Buyers are running me a bit ragged but I really don't mind. I enjoy them very much.  Sold what I had and now starting to market to distressed home owners.

Hi William-That is an awesome slideshow. Your pics are simply amazing. One day I hope to be that good. First class my friend. Hope everything got squared away with your Christmas upheaval. One day I will have to make a trip out to California for a visit. You would make a great tour guide. You know all the most beautiful spots. I have an old friend that lives in California as well.  Have a great week my friend. <SMILE>

Spectacular photos and slideshow William. We are expecting a little snow tonight and more on the weekend. I could use a day on the beach soaking up some heat! A pleasure to see your work...

Hi Sharon,

It was a nice hour or so and between the surf, the people and the birds, it felt like spring. Of course that is not too unusual there. It is like that year around. But the crashing surf make it all the more interesting. California's coast beckons the world and you would love it.

Hi Susie, I used the Pentax and got a new D-90 for Christmas. Still  Back in the box until I have some needed accessories. It will be interesting  to see what difference the bigger more powerful camera  makes in my presentations. The Pentax is only 6 months and it has a great feel and haven't even tried out the other one as yet. Hope to in the next few weeks.

More snow for you and likely more rain in our forecast. The snow will end in a couple months and then you will be enthralled with Spring. Can't wait to see your wonderful photography works. What camera are you now using?

Stay warm and keep taking snow pictures because it melts and then we have to wait for another whole year to pass. :-)

William,

Great photos of the coast.  One would've thought it would not have been so nice there right now.  Thanks for keeping us informed.

Hi Dan, It was just beautiful. The water was so light blue ( aquamarine) it almost looked like what you would expect in Hawaii. Guess with all the bubbles it picked up more light than usual. But it was cold none the less. The sun made the outdoor temp very mild and the visuals were beautiful with all the sea life mostly just sitting around sunning.

William, I am still scratching my head about the "visitors". I had to re-read it quite a few times! The photos are wonderful, you are so blessed that you have that scenery available to you.

I sure could use that type of little get-away right now, LOL, but since I can't, I will take the photos and enjoy them to the fullest extent!

Beautiful slideshow, William. I love La Jolla, and Point Loma, and.... LOL  About the seals - just exactly what does a judge have to do with it?  Is that something like foreclosure for the critters? LOL They couldn't do it in SF, the critters there left on their own, and I wonder how that will effect tourism at Pier 39...

Debi

Hi Andrea,

The residents of La Jolla and the city are battling about the beach there. The beach area has a constructed area that was originally deeded to the city to keep the beach set aside for children as a cove. The seals came in and took over . The residents want the beach and environmentalists sued to prevent the take over and removal of the seals. The city suggested using loud sounds like dogs barking to chase the seals out. The residents don't like the idea. The judge wants the city to decide and short of that the judge will decide. What I was sort of laughing about is who tells the seals if they have to leave. And exactly how do you tell them. Sho! Sho! Not going to happen. Seals go where they want, when they want and unless there is a predoator like a white shark, they will stay there. That was one of the arguments for wanting them removed from the beach. Other large predators coming to too close for swimmers. The seals are messy and they do their business in the water and on the beach where people want to swim and lay out in the sun. Hope that clears this up. I should I suppose write more about this. :-)

Hi Debi, That is a nice way to put it. Foreclosure for Critters. I wrote an explaination to Andrea perhaps that will help people understand the term " visitors"?. The residents don't want them to stay any longer as residents. "Out damn spot , Out", sort of thing. LMAO

OMG - Those are GORGEOUS looking photos!  Anything that has blue sky as a respite from the relentless storms hitting us is so welcome!  I note that you said "Seals" had moved into the beach area - not Sea Lions.  I thought perhaps the San Francisco Pier 39 bunch had found digs in your area:-)

Posted by Myrl Jeffcoat (Real Living Great West Real Estate) over 2 years ago

Hi Mryl,  Thank you. Well you are so right. We have both here but you are correct , they loosely referred to them as seals when in fact they are sea lions on the rocks and seals on the beach picture below. I think when I break out my D-90 I will do a post of these critters and show the difference up close and personal.

SEA LIONS:

  • Earflaps
  • Long hairless foreflippers
  • Hindflippers rotate underneath to allow them to walk on land
  • Swim underwater using foreflippers like wings of a bird
  • Long smooth whiskers or vibrissae

SEALS:

  • Earholes
  • Short, hairy foreflippers & long claws
  • Move on land by wiggling on belly & keep hindflippers straight out
  • Swim by steering with foreflippers and powering with hindflipers
  • Whiskers are crimped or beaded

Hi Ray, Thanks for stopping by. We have so many strong photographers here in the Rain. People tat really know how to get the photo they want and don't rely on just sunning warm days with an hour to spare. I am leaning but I would bet given a fair camera, anyone could just as well as I.  I do so enjoy it and maybe that is what is what is showing through and not so much skill or knowledge. Having an abundance of subjects and places to take photos of, it really helps. I have no allusions as to my skill level. If you want real help I can point you in the right direction though. None the less, you always make me feel so terrific with your wonderful kindness, encouragement and especially your friendship.

Hi Tony and Darcy,

Sounds like you need a trip to CA. Coastal preferably and you would love it. It is ever changing and no matter how often you go to the coastline the experience is usually different. The colors are different, the sounds and even the wave action. Sometimes it is almost still with small rolling waves that make very little sound. The sun sets which I haven even begun to show are totally amazing. Hawaii is another place with so much diversity in the various islands and well as even on Oahu. Yep, it sounds like the perfect time of year for you to experience this for yourself and get out of the cold.

Great work William. The critters left San Francisco and moved up to the Pacific Northwest shortly after we made the same move. I think we are all going to end up in Alaska.

Hi Bill, It is 68 here today, you should plan a trip to a warm area and not have to wait. I also think 68 it is too cold  and heading to the desert this weekend for some warm sun. Than family there leasing for the month and I have a place to hang out, :-)
