What's Happening in San Diego This Week - The San Diego County Fair, That's What

The San Diego County Fair

One of the largest annual events in San Diego County is the Fair. Drawing in over 1.5 million attendees, it is the 10th largest Fair in the US.

The San Diego County fair will run for 21 days through the July 4th holiday. This years theme is " Mad About the Fair" a take off on the Mad Hatter Tea Party. The Fair salutes the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carrol's much beloved book, " Alice's Adventures in Wonderland ".

Our fair is noted for it's weird and fried concoctions. I mostly stay away from those things but for the younger generations that have not had cholesterol issues as yet, they seem to relish these dishes. I am not going to describe the dozen or so foods because they actually don't do a thing for my appetite.

The only deep fried thing I actually crave is plump and golden Southern Fried Chicken and for that I am willing for forgo the worry about cholesterol.

There is a ton of entertainment and depending on your own taste, there is something for everyone.

One of the things I most appreciate, besides parking at the fair, is the remote parking at several locations and you park you car and the bus will take you directly to the entrance. Parking on site is $10 per car and depending what time you get to fair grounds, you may actually have to walk quite a distance to the gates. So I recommend you actually use the off-site parking and leave the " driving to us" as they say.

In my County Western dancing days, I loved donning my cowboy boots and hat and I felt like I fit right in. Today, that attire is not so prevalent so I will be leaving my Stetson's and Lucchese western boots at home.

See You At the Fair

Hi William,

The last country fair we went to was in Napa, when we were living there.  The San Diego one sounds like wonderful fun...Enjoy, and we look forward to seeing your  pictures.  A

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel , I haven't been in the last couple years and not sure I will make it this year. It is good exercise if you can beat the temptation to eat your way through the fair,

William-The fair sounds like fun. I haven't been in yrs. It is definitely geared towards the younger crowd with families. Now I bet you looked quite dashing in your Country/Western days. I would have loved to see that, I learmed more new and interesting things about you, I love it.

Hi Sharon Lee , I suppose I "am" full of surprises. Actually my life has always had some fun and interesting twists and turns. Back when ( actually not that many years ago) country western dancing was a favorite interest and avocation. My dance partner ( who had the same last name but not related) and I had a dance instructor that held a gold metal in professional dance. We were pretty good and I can say that it was responsible for keeping me lean and fit. The workouts were just that, real workouts for hours at a time. And fun, I don't want to forget that. I can't even locate a picture, though I have one or two somewhere.

Dancing is a lot of fun but as you said great exercise to keep you in shape.  Life is about variety and fun so I am glad you have had some. It just has been great learning more about you so I am glad you shared that. When we moved down south 10 yrs ago my cousin who is a wonderful southern cook made me southern fried chicken for the first time. It was very good.  Haven't had any since.

Hi Sharon Lee , I think I could use a major dose of dance training about now but it would probably do me in. As for the fried Chicken, some people in California don't know anything about the subject and for most people who care about their health, would think Fried anything is a curse word. And then we have the other 75% of the population who think anything they find served in a fast food place must be good. "King size that order, please"

Hi Hannah Williams , They have a huge floral and landscaping pavilion and it is rather amazing that landscapers spend so much money on the displays. The fancy rabbits and fancy chickens are really something to see. More varieties than I ever saw growing up. Actually there is so much but I spend a lot of time in the ametuer and professional photo displays. Some astounding talent there.

Hi John Pusa  , it sounds like you have had the experience . It can be if the weather doesn't get too hot. Usually a cool breeze in the evening because it is located right on the coast in Del Mar.

Good morning William. The idea of a "country fair" in San Diego is a bit odd to me but reading this post took me there too.

I haven't been to the fair in years and years.  I ought to fix that one of these days! That's a wonderful picture, William!

CONGRATULATIONS on having this blog FEATURED in the PHOTOS group!

Hi Sheila Anderson , It is the San Diego County ( not country) Fair. But You are still more right than incorrect, because the Cattle livestock, chickens, pigs and rabbits make for a real 4-H country fair. We have lots of farms and horse ranches here and the owners all show up at fair. It is a big deal when they get top dollar for their animals and produce.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat , Wow thanks so much. That photo was taken when it was almost totally dark. I did a bit of editing to bring it to life.

My favorite time of year and an annual tradition since my children were little. Almost makes me want to move back to San Diego, just for the Fair! By the way, we still call it the "Del Mar Fair".

Hey William Johnson ... Would love to see you in a photo with Stetson and Lucchese boots! Way long time ago I played in a western band and wore cowboy boots, but not Lucchese! :O) Gotta agree, on occasion, I go for the fried chicken too! I've never been to the San Diego County Fair, but my kids did a few years back, and they raved about it! Enjoy!
